Son of legendary Tassie surfer Dave Mckean, James has created a name for himself as a hard charging surfer from South East Tasmania. James's likeable personality, strong work ethic, and intimate knowledge of the ocean make him an asset to any surf travel adventure with TPX. From small wave maneuvers to charging Shipsterns Bluff, James can add value in all facets of your surf next travel adventure.
He graduated from university, as Australians call it, with a Bachelor of Human Movement. He passes this education on by coaching surfers with the Tasmanian High Performance Surfing Camps and as a physical education teacher. An excellent educator, James is also a proficient waterman trained in CPR, First Aid, and jest-ski assisted rescue certainly making him an asset in any water situation.
James's surfing career allows him to pursue adventure and exploration around the world. This path has led him to seek the biggest barrels and best waves possible in an intrepid quest for XXL size waves. He has helped countless people pursue there own personal dreams as a surf coach and guide from his home in Tasmania to the outer reaches of Fiji, Samoa, Hawaii, Indonesia, and the Caribbean.
His personal goals include riding big waves in both Australia and internationally with an aim to win the ‘Monster Tube’ or ‘Ride of the Year’ category for the international Billabong XXL awards.
