AIARE Introduction to Avalanches and Companion Rescue Classes

Introduction to Avalanches - Full day class
Avalanches are a fact of life in the mountains and an AIARE Intro to Avalanches course is the first step in a never-ending apprenticeship of learning about avalanches and their properties.  These classes combine classroom and practical outdoor experiences to form the beginning of the avalanche education process.  Structured to meet industry standards and built to be informative as well as practical in nature, this class will give you a basic understanding of avalanches.  Topics covered will include:

• General information about avalanche hazard, how to avoid them, and proper equipment for traveling in avalanche terrain
• Avalanche statistics and human factors
• Avalanche terminology
• Avalanche terrain and terrain traps
• Snow pack layering, conditions, and weather factors
• Obvious clues and red flags
• Avalanche and weather bulletins
• Simple decision making tools
• Travel protocols and basic route selection
• Companion recovery including probing, shoveling, and beacon use

Companion rescue - Half-day class
Every backcountry user should have the basics of companion rescue mastered.  Companion rescue will discuss the fundamentals of beacon operation and how to perform single and multiple searches.  Topics covered will include:

• Importance of beacon skills (burial time-survival statistics)
• Beacon operation and search principles
• Demonstration and practice of initial, secondary, and pinpoint search
• Rescue practice scenarios including group management, probing & shoveling
• Overview of first aid and emergency skills needed in actual rescues
  

These classes can be combined or done individually.  They can be tailored to meet your time requirements and desired learning outcomes.
